Disability In TV and Film - A Touch Of Frost

In lesson we have been looking at how disability is presented in film and TV and how this may effect how people with a disability are viewed in day today life. We looked at a clip from the hit TV Drama 'A Touch Of Frost' staring David Jason. We made some notes on the clips and then corrected each others in Green pen, here are a copy of my notes: A Touch of Frost: Ability and Disability The representation of ability and disability is shown through the way in which the police treat Billy throughout the clip. At the beginning when the cut away from the long shot, being when the police are chasing him, to the close up shot, of the Billy being caught by the police, shows the police hesitate when they realise he is disabled and they drop him lower because of his disability because it’s not the usual suspect to commit a crime. This can also be shown by the fact that Billy looks scared and disorientated when the police start chasing him, making the audience emphasize with hi...

Conventions of a Thriller

Image
Thrillers contain many different essences that show the audience they are about to watch a thriller: Political Thrillers: these often portray the idea that the protagonist is set to save the day and keep the government ,which employs him,in a stable condition. these can sometimes be based on real life events and sometimes have hints of a conspiracy thriller in them. 'The Hunt For Red October' is an example of a political thriller.       Spy Thrillers: The hero is generally employed by the government to be their agent and is violent to either protect or get what the government wants. These can often have elements of both political thrillers and conspiracy thrillers.     Military Thrillers: The protagonist is typically in a uniform and works against the enemy whether alone or in a team and ends up succeeding against all the odds. A good example of this 'Saving Private Ryan'.        Conspiracy Thrillers: A con...

One Page Pitch

Image
This is our one page pitch video, I wasn't at school at this time so it was the other three girls in my group who put it all together!     The group were really clear in what they wanted and knew what they wanted to speak about and get across, they made the points from what we had all spoke about and communicated very clearly.

One page pitch ideas

Hello Everybody! As a group we were asked to produce a sheet with the information about what we were planning to do for our thriller. Media Don’t Walk Alone- Beth, Grace, Eleanor, Tahlia Working Title – Don’t Walk Alone Movie Length – 1hr 47 minutes Genre – Horror-thriller Synopsis – A girl goes out to clear her head during the early evening hours and finds herself in an open field, where she hears dramatic screams/cries for help. Intertwined with mystery; entangled with darkness and touched by the emotions of people who have passed away. Potential Tag Lines – “Who will prevail, her or them?”, “Ghosts are just made up stories.”, “and can you see that?” Brief Elucidation – The idea of it is to unpredictably frighten and cause discomfort for the audience by showing that once you have witnessed the supernatural you will never be able to get away or forget what you saw. This is because the supernatural world has forced the voices in her head to make both the audie...

Se7en Textual analysis

Image
Hello Everyone! In class we watched a clip from the film 'Se7en' and then we were asked to look at some stills from what we watched and elaborate on what they show and why certain things were done. Here's just a little bit of information about the film: Genre: Drama/Thriller Director: David Fincher ( Also done films such as 'Fight Club' and 'Gone Girl') Screenplay: Andrew Kevin Walker ( Was also involved with 'Panic Room') The film contains some famous faces as well such as Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow . In this screen grab we can clearly tell the man is involved in the police service due to the badge, we also know he posses harmful weapons. The fact his hand is on the badge makes the audience look at that out of all the objects and it shows he's proud of what he's achieved. In this we see the retired detective (Morgan Freeman, right) speaking with the new recruited detective (Brad Pitt ,Left...

The Fall textual analysis

Although I completed this as part of my study of the representation of gender for my AS exam, it is relevant to the my coursework as, in planning for this, I will need to consider how the representation of gender is constructed through the use of camera shots, mise-en-scene, editing and sound. This will hopefully enable me to represent characters in a variety of different ways in my film opening. The Fall textual analysis

Nerve textual analysis (Art Of The Title)

Image
Hello Everyone welcome back!   I was asked to use art of the title to explore a title sequence and see what was good about it and how different things used had different effects on the audience's.  I decided to look at the title sequence for 'Nerve' which shows many different social media platforms. This shows a Microsoft Word effect which creates a certain sense of familiarity to the audience and makes it relatable from the very beginning. By doing this it could catch their attention as it infers it may be based in recent day so they can relate. This shows many different adverts flashing up on the screen uncontrollably, showing that a virus or something may be involved in this film and maybe someone loses control of their social media, promoting a worry for the audience as the media and especially social media plays a huge part in the everyday lives of a large majority of the population. This looks like the cut out of a news paper article showing...

Preliminary Evaluation

We were asked to make a preliminary evaluation video but our group struggled with the filming and editing of it, mainly because we couldn't take each other seriously! o we decided in the end that we would make our own preliminary evaluations because it was easier. i decided to do mine in the form of a powerpoint presentation because it was different! Our preliminary task

Image
This is our preliminary task, we had a issue with missing files and it took longer to complete than we originally thought. I feel we got the continuity right and we managed to get some good shots, one of our group (Grace) did more editing where as me and Eleanor did a lot of the camera work, so next time I need more experience of editing. The benefits of working with the camera has now enabled me to feel like I can set up a shot on my own without needing help.

Story Boarding

Image
Hi Everyone and welcome back to my blog! so before our preliminary task we were asked to plan a storyboard, of what we were thinking of doing for our film, this benefited us because it helped us to keep to a certain story in case we began adding things in half way through that would just delay us in the producing process. It made it so much easier in the long run! I thought it would be easier to present this through a online storyboard, also I thought it seemed more creative!                                                                                      ...

The setting for our preliminary task

Image
Hello everyone! so we were asked to take some photos of the setting where we filmed out preliminary task. when we were looking for the perfect setting we looked for a few key elements, these were: a plain room with some white washed walls so that it was easier to film and edit, we also looked for a small space so that it was enclosed to add effect to the filming, lastly we looked for somewhere with stairs and railings so it would be easier to film when Grace ran off from Tahlia.   this was the table we used and the side of a stair well, the effect of the railing helps to add to the rough and unorganised look we were going for. Also the plain walls help with editing.  this is also the table we used but from looking down at the floor which is rough looking and the mat at the back which is also dirty adds to the effect of a rough area.  these were the 2nd set of stairs which Grace runs up to escape from Tahlia, the rough wood effect on the railing was...

Utopia Analysis

Hello Everyone and welcome back to my blog!  In order to learn and get more of a in-depth look at post production we were given a Utopia article to analyse and the amount of work that is actually put into producing is crazy! From correcting all things like colour enhancing all the backgrounds to make the place fit the storyline better and then it goes to deciding what shot to use which would make the scene look better. The main shock for me was finding out that you can completely change the colour of an object it if doesn't fit the colour trend that the programme is wanting. The directors decided to use the use of extravagant colours to their advantage and by doing this is also makes their programme look unusual and attracts the attention of more of the audience. From reading this article it really shows the lengths my group can go to when filming our clips and it allows us to get experience for tasks in the future. it has benefitted me because I f...

Preliminary Task challenge

Hi Everyone!   we've been given a preliminary task, which is to film a short piece of footage between 1 minute and 1 minute 30 seconds and it must involve someone walking through a door and sitting down and have a conversation with another person. My group is Myself, Eleanor, Grace and Tahlia. We all have different roles so mine and Eleanor's is be the directors and sort all the filming out and editing and grace and tahlia are our actors! so today we filmed for the first time, it was so stressful we got the camera onto this setting and we had no clue how to get it back to normal, but all we ended up having to do was flick a leaver and we were sorted! we've started filming our short story which is looking good so far! Its looking really good and we are getting sorted with the props and where we need to be but it all takes time. The story line which we are trying to create is that a drug addict is walking into a dirty dark room and sitting down but as they walk...

Sword Fight

Hello Everyone! This is a video of a fake sword fight between Tahlia and Grace, Tahlia gets killed and grace is the killer. I wasn't doing media at this time so I didn't do any of the filming.

Camera angle Shots

Image
This is a close up shot because you can see the facial expressions. This may be used when a scene is really intense and the facial expression can get across some information to the viewer.                                      This is a establishing shot because it sets the scene. Which may be important when needing the viewer to realise something about where the scene is set or being filmed.                                       This is a long shot ...

Welcome!

Welcome! My names Beth and I'm new to blogging and Media studies all together. I chose media because it's almost like everything I love about TV all rolled into one! I love finding out the different shot angles and how different scenes are filmed and how they appear to be set in somewhere on the other side of the world to where they are actually filmed! I don't really have a lot of experience in filming and camera shots so its going to be difficult to learn it all and take everything on board but im sure it will become easier as time goes on! I cant wait to film and edit my 2 minute thriller film that's going to be the best part!
